Menopausal Skin: Why Your Skin Suddenly Feels Older (And What Actually Helps)
Menopausal Skin: Why Your Skin Suddenly Feels Older (And What Actually Helps)
There is a moment I see time and time again in clinic.
A woman in her 40s or 50s sits down and says something along the lines of:
"I don't know what's happened to my skin."
Sometimes it's dryness.
Sometimes it's redness.
Sometimes it's that tired look that no amount of concealer seems able to hide.
Often they've bought new skincare, changed products multiple times, spent money on treatments, and are becoming increasingly frustrated because nothing seems to be working.
What I usually tell them is this:
Your products haven't stopped working. Your skin has changed underneath them.
And for many women, the reason is menopause.
"I Don't Look Like Myself Anymore"
One of the most common comments I hear is not actually about wrinkles.
It's:
"I just don't look like myself anymore."
That statement is often accompanied by things like:
-
My skin feels thinner.
-
My face looks tired all the time.
-
My makeup sits differently.
-
My skin is suddenly sensitive.
-
Everything looks a bit saggy.
The interesting thing is that these changes can happen gradually enough that you don't notice them at first, then one day you catch your reflection and suddenly it feels obvious.
Most women assume they need stronger skincare.
In reality, what's happening is often much deeper than that.
The Hormone Nobody Talks About Enough
Oestrogen has a remarkable effect on skin health.
It helps maintain:
-
Collagen production
-
Skin thickness
-
Elasticity
-
Hydration
-
Barrier function
-
Wound healing
When oestrogen starts to decline during perimenopause and menopause, every one of those systems is affected.
This isn't a cosmetic issue.
It's biology.
And understanding that can be incredibly reassuring.
Because it means you're not failing.
Your skin is responding exactly as menopausal skin does.
What Menopausal Skin Actually Looks Like
Every woman experiences menopause differently, but there are certain patterns I see repeatedly.
Dryness That Won't Go Away
Many women describe applying moisturiser constantly but still feeling dry.
This isn't simply a lack of moisture on the surface.
The skin barrier itself becomes less efficient, meaning skin loses water more easily.
No matter how many creams you apply, if the barrier is struggling, the skin can still feel tight and uncomfortable.
Loss of Firmness
Research suggests women can lose up to 30% of their collagen within the first five years after menopause.
That loss often shows up as:
-
Thinner skin
-
Crepey texture
-
Reduced elasticity
-
Softer facial contours
Many women blame themselves or assume they've suddenly aged overnight.
In reality, hormonal changes are playing a major role.
Redness and Sensitivity
Some women who have never had sensitive skin suddenly find themselves reacting to products they've used for years.
Others develop facial flushing, redness or visible thread veins.
I often describe this as the skin equivalent of a hot flush.
The vascular system becomes more reactive, leading to increased redness and sensitivity.
Dullness
One of the earliest signs of menopausal skin is loss of radiance.
Skin turnover slows down.
The complexion can start looking tired and uneven, even when you're feeling perfectly well.
The Biggest Mistake I See
The biggest mistake I see isn't neglect.
It's overcorrection.
Women become frustrated with their skin and start adding more and more products.
Stronger acids.
More active ingredients.
More exfoliation.
More treatments.
Unfortunately, this often creates an entirely new problem: a damaged skin barrier.
Many of the patients I see who think they have acne are actually experiencing irritation and inflammation from trying too many products.
More isn't always better.
Sometimes the most effective thing we can do is simplify.
What Actually Helps?
The answer is rarely a single miracle treatment.
Healthy skin is usually built through a combination of the right treatments, the right skincare and realistic expectations.
Start With Your Skincare
Before we talk about treatments, I always look at what someone is using at home.
For many menopausal patients, the foundations are:
-
Barrier-supporting moisturisers
-
Consistent SPF 50
-
Carefully introduced retinoids
-
Evidence-based active ingredients
The goal isn't to wage war on your skin.
The goal is to support it.
Treatments That Work With Your Skin
I'm increasingly drawn towards treatments that improve skin quality rather than dramatically change someone's appearance.
For menopausal skin, that often includes:
Polynucleotides
These are one of my favourite treatments for menopausal skin.
Rather than creating volume, they support the skin's own repair processes.
They're particularly useful for skin that feels thin, depleted or fragile.
Skin Boosters
Hydration becomes a major challenge during menopause.
Skin boosters help restore hydration within the skin itself, creating a fresher, healthier appearance without looking artificial.
Chemical Peels
Not all peels need to be aggressive.
In clinic, I often use treatments specifically designed for menopausal skin concerns such as dullness, uneven tone and reduced cell turnover.
IPL and Thread Vein Treatments
Many women don't realise there are effective treatments available for menopausal redness, flushing and thread veins.
Often these concerns can be improved significantly with the right approach.
What You Don't Need
You don't need twenty skincare products.
You don't need to buy every trend you see online.
You don't need to spend hundreds of euro before understanding what's actually happening in your skin.
And you certainly don't need someone promising unrealistic results.
What you need is a plan based on your skin, your concerns and this particular stage of your life.
Menopause Doesn't Mean Giving Up On Your Skin
One thing I always tell patients is this:
Menopause changes your skin.
It doesn't ruin it.
The skin you're living in now simply has different needs than it did ten or twenty years ago.
Once you understand those changes, everything becomes much easier.
The goal isn't to look twenty-five again.
The goal is to look healthy, confident and comfortable in your own skin.
And that is entirely achievable.
