A Galway Guide to Skin Peels - What They Are, What They Do, and Who They're For
Skin peels are one of the most misunderstood treatments in aesthetic medicine. Mention a chemical peel and many people picture dramatic peeling, red raw skin, and a week hiding indoors. The reality - particularly with the clinical-grade peels available at Renew Skincare & Aesthetics in Gort, Co. Galway - is quite different.
What is a Skin Peel?
A skin peel (also called a chemical peel) uses a carefully selected acid solution to exfoliate the outer layers of the skin, stimulate cell renewal, and improve skin tone, texture, and clarity. The depth of the peel - superficial, medium, or deep - determines the results and the recovery time.
At Renew, we use superficial to medium-depth peels suited to Irish skin types, with particular attention to patients with sensitive skin, rosacea, or menopausal skin changes.
What Do Skin Peels Treat?
Skin peels are effective for a wide range of concerns, including uneven skin tone and pigmentation, dull or congested skin, acne and post-acne marks, fine lines and early skin ageing, rough or uneven texture, and sun damage.
What to Expect
A skin peel at Renew begins with a consultation to assess your skin and select the appropriate peel. On the day, your skin is cleansed and the peel solution is applied for a controlled period. You may feel a mild tingling or warmth. After the peel, your skin may look slightly pink and feel tight - similar to mild sunburn. Superficial peels typically involve minimal visible peeling; medium peels may involve some flaking over 3–5 days.
How Many Sessions Do I Need?
A course of 3 - 6 peels, spaced 2-4 weeks apart, is typically recommended for best results. Maintenance peels every 2–3 months help sustain the improvement.
Are Skin Peels Safe for Sensitive or Rosacea-Prone Skin?
Yes, with the right peel and the right practitioner. At Renew, Yvonne McNamara selects peels appropriate for your skin type and concern. Patients with rosacea or sensitive skin are assessed carefully, and gentler formulations are used where appropriate.
